Book Review – Wicked Lovely
Today is seems like there is so many different series of fantasy novels that have characters that are either vampires, werewolves, fairies and other mythological creatures. I have chosen this latest series starter because it was only 99 cents in the Barnes and Noble E-book section. Although it’s a ploy to get you buy the other novels in the series, it is a very good one since I always end up doing that.
Wicked Lovely is a book about fairies. I am not sure there is anything else besides fairies, but the first book only consists of them. It seems to be taking place at the same time we live in now. As a modern fantasy book. I can’t say that I loved it, but I can’t say I disliked it either. It was good but certain things about it seemed rushed at times then slow. But the author is wonderful at imagery. The way she describes the characters in book is very detailed, almost too detailed. You can relate to the characters though, understand their feelings and either want to cheer or boo depending on the situation.
The novel is about a girl who was born being able to see fairies. In this world, normal humans are unable to see them unless the fairy chooses to let them see by changing their forms. She is taught that they are dangerous and learns how to live with being able to see them yet act like she cannot. There are many different types of fairies along with fairy royalty involved in this story. There is essential a game between a Winter Queen fairy and a Summer King fairy. In a twist of fate, she is involved in their world that in more ways than one and doesn’t realize this until it is too late. I cannot really say much more about the story or plot. It is pretty straight forward, there is a few surprises but at times may seem predictable.
Overall, I did enjoy reading it. I will be getting the rest of the series at some time or another but as a starter of a series and at only 99 cents, it was enough to pull me in. I think high schoolers will enjoy this the most. But I would not recommend for middle schoolers. It does have a few mature scenes in it.
Have you read a really good fantasy novel that you would like to share? Please let me know! I am always interested in reading new books. Or have you read this one? Let me know what you think.
