Sci-Fi and Fantasy Characters in Historical Costumes
You’ve probably never really wondered what Batman would look like in a 17th century style portrait, complete with a stiff, ruffled collar. But Sacha Goldberger DID wonder, and turned that curiousity into an interesting collection of historical-style portraits of many science fiction, fantasy, and comic characters.
Sacha explains that the purpose of this project is to portray the subjects in a moment where they could indulge in a bit of narcissism, which is usually denied heroes and the super-powerful, who are always being called upon to serve the public selflessly. “The collection demonstrates the use of 17 century techniques counterpointing light and shadow to illustrate nobility and fragility of the super powerful of all times…“
“As science fiction meets history of art, time meets an inexhaustible desire for mythology which is within each of us.” – Sacha Goldberger
The costumes are pretty amazing, and must have required hundred of hours of planning, measuring, cutting, stitching, fitting, and styling. If you’ve ever tried putting together your own cosplay costume, you can imagine what an undertaking this was. And when you add the accessories, such as masks, jewelry, weapons, and make up, it’s easy to see that this was a huge project.
Take a look at the entire collection at Sacha’s “Super Flemish” portrait gallery. It’s truly amazing, especially when you take a moment to zoom in and appreciate the details.
